System Showing No Energy Data

Overview

If a PV system in enSights.ai is showing no energy data or displaying zeros, there are several possible causes — from a routine data sync delay to a connectivity issue or a physical equipment problem. This article walks you through a four-step diagnostic sequence to identify and resolve the most common causes. Follow the steps in order, starting with the quickest checks first.

Reading the Alert Indicator

Before starting the diagnostic steps, check the PV Systems view for alert indicators next to your site name. A bell icon appears when the platform has detected an issue.

Hover over the bell icon to read the alert message. The message will identify the affected component (system, inverter, or meter) and describe the issue:

Alert Message

Affected Component

What It Means

Communication error in system [name]

System

The platform has lost contact with the monitoring device for this site.

Communication error in inverter [name]

Inverter

A specific inverter is not reporting data to the platform.

Communication error in meter [name]

Meter

A specific meter is not reporting data to the platform.

No energy yield in system [name]

System

The site is communicating but reporting zero energy production.

No energy yield in inverter [name]

Inverter

A specific inverter is online but producing no energy.

No energy yield in meter [name]

Meter

A specific meter is online but recording no energy flow.

Tip: The bell icon color reflects the configured alert severity: yellow indicates a warning-level alert; red indicates a critical alert. Your organization's administrator sets the severity thresholds.

Diagnostic Steps

Work through the steps below in order. Stop as soon as you identify the cause.

Step 1: Check if the data sync is still in progress

Data from your PV systems is not pushed to enSights.ai in real time — it syncs on a scheduled interval. If you have just added a system or recently noticed missing data, the platform may simply be waiting for its next sync.

  • Step 1: Locate the system in the PV Systems view and click its name to open the system detail page.

  • Step 2: Find the Last Data Update timestamp on the system detail page.

  • Step 3: Check the timestamp. If it is less than 30 minutes ago, the data sync is likely still in progress. Wait 15–30 minutes and refresh the page.

    • Note: If the Last Data Update timestamp is more than 1 hour old and no data has appeared, the delay is not a routine sync issue. Proceed to Step 2.

Tip: Sync intervals vary by monitoring vendor. If you are unsure of your site's sync frequency, contact your CSM or check the system settings page.

Step 2: Check for a Communication Error alert

If the sync wait did not resolve the issue, check whether the platform is detecting a communication problem with the monitoring device.

Step 1: Return to the PV Systems view and locate the site.

Step 2: Look for a bell icon to the right of the site name. Hover over it to read the alert message.

Step 3: If the message reads "Communication error in system / inverter / meter [name]," the platform has lost contact with the monitoring device for that component.

Step 4: Verify the physical equipment is powered on and connected to the internet on-site.

Step 5: If the physical equipment appears to be operating normally, submit a support ticket via the platform. Include the site name and the exact alert message text.

Note: A communication error on the inverter or meter does not always mean the full system is offline. Check whether other components on the same site are reporting data normally.
