How to add new inverters

Overview

When inverters are installed or replaced in the field, the change first appears at your monitoring source — not in enSights. This article shows you how to pull new inverters into enSights with a system sync, and how to handle a replaced inverter so you keep its historical production data.

Before You Begin

enSights reads inverter data from your monitoring source, so the field change must already be visible at the source before you sync. enSights imports the inverters the source reports — it cannot create inverters the source does not yet show.

Important: Confirm the new or replaced inverters already appear at your monitoring source before you start. If the source is not yet updated, the sync has nothing new to import.

Sync the New Inverters from the Source

Once the source shows the new inverters, sync the system to pull them into enSights.

Step 1: In the left sidebar, click PV Systems to open the systems table.

Step 2: Find the system whose inverters changed, then click the three-dot menu (⋮) at the far right of its row.

Step 3: Select Sync System. The Sync Information panel opens.

Step 4: Turn on the Inverters toggle so the sync pulls inverter additions and changes. Leave the other toggles off unless you also want those fields updated.

Note: If you see a “Some inverters are locked” message, one or more inverters are sync-locked and will not be changed by this sync. This refers to changes in existing inverters, and not new inverters. To open the lock – you must go to inverter settings in the analysis page.

Step 5: Click Sync. The panel closes and enSights begins importing from the source.

Tip: You can turn on more than one toggle at a time — for example, Capacity and Inverters — if several system attributes changed together in the field.

Important: After you click Sync, the new inverters do not appear instantly. Allow a few minutes for the sync to finish and the inverters to arrive before you check the system.

Confirm the New Inverters Arrived

After waiting a few minutes, open the system to verify the new inverters are now listed.

Step 1: In the PV Systems table, click the system name to open its detail view.

Step 2: Scan the list to confirm the new inverters now appear. The new inverters are present alongside the existing ones.

Handle a Replaced Inverter

When an inverter is replaced rather than simply added, the old unit is still listed after the sync. You have two options for the old inverter: delete it or keep it for its history by renaming it and suspending its alerts.

Option A — Delete the old inverter (removes its history)

Step 1: In the inverter list, click the three-dot menu (⋮) on the old inverter’s row.

Step 2: Select Delete, then confirm. The inverter and its historical data are removed from the system.

Important: Deleting an inverter permanently removes its historical production data. Choose this only when you do not need the old inverter’s past performance.

Option B — Rename and suspend alerts (keeps its history — recommended)

Step 1: In the inverter list, open the old inverter’s three-dot menu (⋮) and select Edit. The Inverter Settings panel opens.

Step 2: In the Name field, rename the inverter so it is easy to identify as retired — for example, add the prefix “Old -”.

Step 3: Turn on the Suspend Alerts toggle. The decommissioned inverter stops generating alerts.

Step 4: Save your changes. The renamed inverter stays in the system with its history intact but no longer triggers alerts.

Tip: A clear prefix such as “Old -” keeps retired inverters grouped together and easy to filter out of your active monitoring views.

Which Option Should You Choose?

Use this table to decide how to handle a replaced inverter.

Action

What it does

Historical data

When to use

Delete

Removes the inverter from the system entirely

Lost — permanently removed

Only when the old inverter’s past performance is not needed

Rename + Suspend Alerts

Keeps the inverter in the system but stops its alerts

Retained — stays available

Recommended in most cases, to preserve history

About Sync Locking

Each inverter has a Sync Locked toggle in its Inverter Settings panel. When an inverter is sync-locked, future syncs will not overwrite its settings — this is what the “Some inverters are locked” message in the Sync Information panel refers to. Lock an inverter when you have customized its details (such as a renamed, suspended old unit) and want to protect those changes from being reset on the next sync. Inverters are locked by default.
